Cybersecurity principles and learning outcomes for computer science and IT-related degrees.
(ISC)2 and CPHC have produced a briefing document and white paper designed to provide course designers and course accreditors with a manual to help them embed cybersecurity into degree modules and associated syllabi.

Five cybersecurity themes are described for inclusion into Computing Science and IT-related degrees, along with their associated core concepts, principles and learning outcomes.

Charities Security Forum (CSF): “Why should I join?”
The Charities Security Forum (CSF) is a group of security people working for charities, addressing the information security problems affecting mainly/only charities. Their membership is 340 charities and growing, across the UK and covers the names you would expect – Salvation Army, CR-UK plus some surprises- The Scout Association, National Trust and many others.

FACiLiTATE Employability Seminar!
On Friday 11th December 2015, project leaders Dr Chris Beaumont and Michael Banford will be attending an Employability Seminar, presenting information from the Cyber Security Knowledge Exchange to explore how Problem Based Learning and E-Learning can be used to enhance Employability for students by working along side academics and industry partners.

The seminar is being hosted by FACiLiTATE and will run from 09:30 to 16:30 (GMT) at Trinity College, Dublin. Other academics and researchers will also be present at the event, showcasing their findings and research as well as Dr Bart Rienties (Open University) as a Keynote speaker for the event.

Direction of the MOOC and development progress
After consolidation with stakeholders the MOOC will take a new direction and focus purely on the teaching and learning regarding the Knowledge Exchange Model (KEM). This means the teaching will combine the KEM and the Learning and Consulting Framework (LCF).

The MOOC will consist of 4 stages with each one being unique and incorporating the LCF in each stage. The combination and structure will mean efficient replication and innovation from other academic institutions that want to implement industry relevant and interesting course content and increase learning capabilities from students.

The MOOC is currently nearing the end of the introduction phase of development and nearing phase 1 of the KEM: Capture.

CSKE at the VIBRANT Security Conference




On the 11th June the CSKE project was represented by our student team at Liverpool John Moores University where they attended the VIBRANT Cyber Security Conference. This is the first UK Workshop of its kind and our team delivered a poster presentation on the Knowledge Exchange Model (KEM).

The KEM model is one of the core components involved in the teaching of the MOOC as well as a key part of the project. The KEM consists of 4 phases.
  • Capture
  • Create
  • Embed
  • Disseminate
These phases essentially underpin the project alongside the learning and consulting framework. This means the project provides the means for both student and academics to create unique resources for a course while offering excellent opportunities for students involved within the development team.

The VIBRANT conference was a brilliant opportunity for the student team not only to represent the project but also explore other ideas and offerings from other universities. It allowed for them to showcase their work from the create phase of the project and spread awareness of the project.

Exploring the MOOC specification
Following recent discussions, our intended prototype MOOC is taking a new direction. We’re moving away from turning the TEL versions of our PBLs in MOOC versions and instead using it to explain the knowledge exchange model used on this project to support other academics or institutions develop their own model and scenarios for their own contexts.

This map explores our current thinking on the content of the revised MOOC.

Evaluation strategy concept maps completed
Evaluation strategy concept maps completed 30th January 2015admin The main features of the evaluations strategy for CSKE are: focus questions with an emphasis on impact and future development; use of concept mapping as a device for both data capture and communication; an iterative process which runs throughout the main project (and potentially beyond as it can then be ‘adopted’ by the project team); and evaluation outcomes and outputs which are easy to access and communicate and which are available to the project team for further development after the cessation of project funding.

Problem based learning scenarios 1 - 9 released
The first round of problem based learning scenarios have now been formulated with our industry partners and are made available through this platform. The scenarios cover a wide range of themes from within cyber security, including: Incident management; software development; information policy and governance in SMEs and others.
